Description

Following the two ancient tragedy productions ‘Oedipus’ and ‘Antigonae’ based on Sophocles, the Carl Orff DVD edition now features another highlight: director Peider A. Defilla’s film ‘Gisei – The Sacrifice’ is Carl Orff’s first stage work. ‘Gisei’ is set in the year 902 in a village school in Japan and is about the sacrificial death of a child. The story of the killing, brought about by an unavoidable fate, is presented in the subsequent main plot as if in a cinematic flashback. The DVD shows the world premiere production by John Dew (who was recently awarded the Carl Orff Prize 2012) at the Staatstheater Darmstadt. The subsequent 15-minute bonus film contains interesting additional information about Orff’s work and in particular his work on ‘Gisei’.
