Description

For his opera ‘Oedipus the Tyrant’, Carl Orff (1895-1982) literally adopted Friedrich Hölderlin’s adaptation of the Sophoclean tragedy. The austere, archaic musical language of the opera, which premiered in Stuttgart in 1959, divided audiences, but the performance at the Staatstheater Darmstadt, staged by John Dew, proves that it is impossible to escape the impact of this work.
