Description

Orff’s Bavarian play is about Duke Albrecht III’s love affair and marriage to the beautiful Augsburg bather’s daughter Agnes Bernauer, which was not in keeping with his rank. Albrecht’s father, Duke Ernst, sees this as a threat to his rightful succession and has Agnes drowned in the Danube as a witch. Duke Albrecht III founded Andechs Monastery in 1455 and is buried in the monastery church, where Carl Orff also found his final resting place.
