Exhibition book
Max Mannheimer, born in 1920, survived the Holocaust as a Jew in a concentration camp. His moving life story has been published in several books and languages. However, few people know about his painterly work, which he created under his Hebrew name “ben yakov”. This volume brings together a selection of 70 works.
Description
Max Mannheimer’s oeuvre follows his poetic motto “I mix the colors”. From a completely independent artistic position, he has created a diverse oeuvre of well over a thousand works with great joy in experimentation since 1955. His dynamic abstract paintings and drawings are signed “ben jakov” (son of Jacob) in memory of his father, who was murdered in a concentration camp. They bear witness to both the horror and the joy of an eventful life. With an introductory essay by Gottfried Knapp, this volume is the first to provide an overview of Max Mannheimer’s painterly oeuvre, which was created in silence.
