Description
Skeleton
Skelett was written for a musician with percussion and marimba. Widmann’s piece was created in two and a half years of collaboration with the percussionist Stefan Blum. Widmann therefore gives Blum the highest degree of artistic freedom and even incorporates theatrical aspects. Widmann only lays down formal cornerstones between the changes of instruments.
The form is given skeleton through the repetition of fixed parts. The performer is free to determine the number of repetitions. The intention to disguise compositional artifice runs through the entire piece.
Thus Skelett is not a piece in the conventional sense. Widmann dispenses with drumsticks; the large drums are only intended as resonators. The percussion is touched anew. The piece searches for the answer to the question of how to produce as similar a sound as possible on different instruments.
